Island Emu Tasmania, is one of Australia's most progressive emu farms, and has been farming emus for seventeen years. Island Emu Tasmania (IET) is structured as a vertically integrated business that farms emus and, more recently, ostriches. IET manages abattoir operations and packaging processes as well as the distribution, sales and marketing of raw and value-added emu and ostrich products. The company manufactures and distributes many skincare, meat, feather and leather based products which it produces entirely at its in-house manufacturing plant. These products are sold both domestically and internationally. The company has three full-time employees at Head Office and two-farm sites, with two part time employees as required. Island Emu Tasmania has achieved an excellent reputation as a high quality supplier of emu based products. Island Emu Tasmania's value added products are targeted mainly at niche markets where quality of product, packaging and value-for-money are very attractive to existing and potential customers. The company no longer sees itself as simply in the business of farming emus. It now sees itself in the business of creating new products and new markets based on raw emu materials. By defining the business in this way the business has broken out of the traditional farming and selling at the farm gate mould.
